WhatsApp API pricing explained
Why there are two bills, what each one is for, and how to estimate cost without being surprised by the half nobody mentions.
Almost every surprise in WhatsApp API budgeting comes from the same place: there are two separate bills, and comparisons usually only mention one.
The two bills
- Meta charges for the messaging itself, based on your usage and its own current pricing. This is billed by Meta.
- Your platform charges a subscription for the software you manage WhatsApp through. This is billed by that platform.
Neither replaces the other. A platform that appears cheaper because it does not mention Meta’s charges is not cheaper — it is quieter.
What drives Meta’s side
Meta prices by conversation rather than per individual message, and the rate varies by category — a business-initiated notification is priced differently from a customer-initiated conversation — and by the recipient’s country. Two businesses sending the same volume can pay very different amounts based on where their customers are and who starts the conversation.
What drives the platform side
Platform pricing is usually quoted per WhatsApp Business Account per month, because the account is the unit that holds numbers and templates. Under that model, cost scales with how many accounts you manage rather than how many messages you send — which is predictable, and is the part you can plan against.
WA Console starts at ₹499 per WABA per month, with one phone number included and additional numbers at ₹199 per number per month. Meta’s messaging charges remain separate.
Estimating sensibly
- Count the accounts you will manage — that gives your platform subscription.
- Estimate conversations, not messages, split by category and country — that drives Meta’s bill.
- Add any extra phone numbers.
- Treat the two totals separately in your budget, because they arrive from two different companies.
